With the promise of warmer weather,  you’ve decided to refresh your outdoor space and buy new outdoor furniture.  However, the process of shopping around to find what you want can be daunting. Here are 10 tips to help you shop like a pro!

1.Start looking early. You’ll have your choice of the pieces and/or fabrics you really want, rather than being tempted to buy what is left in stock.

2.Shop efficiently. You’ve done your homework online and there are a few outdoor furniture retailers that interest you. Give them a call and have a good conversation with them about what you are looking for.  There are no silly questions and you will get a good feel for their level of knowledge and if their offering is aligned with your needs.

3. Plan for success. Make a visit to outdoor furniture retailers at off-peak times.  You’ll have their undivided attention, which will give you the opportunity to ask all your burning questions while you assess their ranges and fully explore their offering.

4. Ask the hard questions. Beauty is more than skin deep. In addition to assessing the aesthetic of the furniture, ask about construction/materials.  The retailer should be loud and proud about the brand of outdoor fabric they use, and the sun fade warranty that comes with it. The best outdoor fabrics are 100% solution-dyed acrylic which have a 5-year sun fade warranty. Other fabrics, such as olefin, have a 3-year sunfade warranty. Hint: Don’t assume the fabric is actually outdoor-proof- we’ve had many customers buy from us after a bad experience with this elsewhere!

5. Expect good service. Your salesperson should be clear,  well-informed, and able confidently answer all of your questions. They should also be asking you questions to help you make the best choice for your lifestyle.

6. Get a definitive answer about when you can expect to receive your furniture.  Despite retailers’ best hopes and intentions, containers regularly get delayed. Can they actually guarantee delivery by your drop-dead date?

Ask if your furniture will arrive by your required date- often a family gathering

8. Enquire about their after-sales service–  will the retailer have these ranges in stock next year if you wish to add pieces? Do they sell covers to fit your set? Will they sell replacement cushions if required?

9. Can they accommodate your needs? If you are not quite ready to take delivery,  ask if a deposit will hold your purchase and if they will store your furniture free of charge.

10. Read the reviews. Take the time to read their Google Reviews to help you assess their level of service, the quality of the products, and the satisfaction of their customers.

Sunbrella® vs olefin fabric: what’s the difference in performance?

Olefin and Sunbrella® are two outdoor fabric materials that feature in outdoor furniture sold here in NZ.  When deciding on a new outdoor lounge set and what calibre of fabric to choose, here’s a concise summary of the key differences between these two fabrics.

1.Material Composition:

Olefin: Olefin is a synthetic fibre made from polypropylene.

Sunbrella: Sunbrella® is also a synthetic fabric but is made from acrylic fibres, referred to as 100% solution-dyed acrylic.  Agora® is another brand of 100% solution-dyed acrylic with the same level of performance and warranty as Sunbrella.

2.UV Resistance and Warranty

Olefin: While Olefin is resistant to fading, it is not as effective as Sunbrella when it comes to UV protection. Prolonged exposure to intense sunlight may cause some colour fading over time. Olefin fabric typically has a 3-year sunfade warranty.

Sunbrella: Sunbrella is renowned for its exceptional UV resistance, making it ideal for outdoor use in sunny regions. It can endure long hours of direct sunlight without significant fading. Sunbrella and Agora both have a 5-year sunfade warranty.

3.Water and Stain Resistance

Olefin: Olefin is naturally water-resistant and repels stains, making it easy to clean and maintain.

Sunbrella: Sunbrella fabric is also water-resistant and repels stains effectively, allowing for simple cleaning and preventing mildew growth.

4. Feel and Comfort:

Olefin: Some Google searches indicate that Olefin has a softer feel than Sunbrella. Also, Olefin also does not transmit any static charge, which can occur in dry climates.

Sunbrella:  Some blogs contradict the above and state that solution-dyed acrylic fabrics are softer than Olefin fabrics .  Sunbrella is also reported to transmit static electricity in dry climates but this is simply not a factor in New Zealand.  The Relative Humidity (RH)  needs to be lower than 55% for static charge to build up and  New Zealand has a year-round outdoor RH of between 70–80% in coastal areas and about 10% lower inland.

 5. Cost:

Olefin: Olefin is often more affordable compared to Sunbrella, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

Sunbrella: Sunbrella fabrics are known for their premium quality and superior longevity which is reflected in their higher price point.  The difference in price for a set with superior fabric is a fraction of the cost of replacing faded and marginalized fabric squabs, or in the worst case, having to replace the whole outdoor set.

Specifically, why isn’t olefin fabric as fade-resistant as acrylic fabrics such as Sunbrella and Agora?

Polypropylene outdoor fabric, such as Olefin, is not as fade-resistant as 100% solution-dyed acrylic outdoor fabric due to the fundamental differences in their chemical compositions and dyeing processes.

Polypropylene is a synthetic polymer that is not inherently resistant to the damaging effects of UV rays and exposure to sunlight. When used in outdoor fabric, polypropylene fibres can be more susceptible to colour fading over time as the UV radiation breaks down the dye molecules, leading to a dulling of the fabric’s colour.

On the other hand, 100% solution-dyed acrylic fabrics, like Sunbrella and Agora undergo a specialized dyeing process where the colour pigments are added to the fibres during manufacturing, making the colour integral to the fabric itself.

This results in a significantly higher level of colour retention and fade resistance, as the dye is deeply embedded within the acrylic fibres and is not merely adhering to the surface.

As a result, 100% solution-dyed acrylic outdoor fabric maintains its vibrant colours and overall appearance for much longer, even in the face of prolonged exposure to sunlight and outdoor elements.

In conclusion, both olefin and Sunbrella/Agora have strong water, stain and mildew resistance.   However, when it comes to UV resistance and colour retention,  Sunbrella and Agora fabrics are superior in performance. They are renowned for their exceptional durability and longevity,  making them an excellent choice for outdoor applications in the sunny and harsh weather conditions of New Zealand.

At Outside Space,  we only use 100% solution-dyed acrylic fabric brands Sunbrella and Agora (both have an unsurpassed 5-year sun fade warranty) for our outdoor furniture squabs. Some of our accent and throw cushions are made from Olefin fabric, as we have less vigorous standards for these smaller items.

We’ve summarized the 6 questions we get asked most often by customers to help you get up to speed on buying outdoor furniture!

1)Can I leave my aluminium outdoor furniture outside all year long?

This is the number one question we get asked. There are two sides to the answer  1)the aluminium frame and 2) the fabric squabs.

The frame:Yes, it is possible to leave your aluminium outdoor furniture frame outside year-round. Weatherproof outdoor furniture materials such as aluminium withstand rain and moisture without damage.

The fabric squabs: Our premium Sunbrella® and Agora® 100% solution-dyed acrylic fabric squabs are engineered to be fade and water-resistant, so they handle the NZ sun and rain beautifully. However, the organic material that lands on your squabs- dirt, pollen, bird droppings, detritus, dead leaves, pet hair etc – is what requires attention.  These premium outdoor fabric squabs are unmatched in their performance, but they are low-maintenance, not NO-maintenance.

So, we ask our customers to meet us halfway!  We sell only high-quality materials that are proven to handle outdoor weather.  Just like your car, your home and your clothes, some basic but regular cleaning and attention from our customers will keep their outdoor furniture looking pristine for many years.

We always say to our customers that the best option is to bring your squabs inside ahead of a weather event and over winter when not in use. The second best option is to invest in custom-fitted high-quality rain covers which we sell. We have had rave reviews about our rain covers. One customer stopped by just to tell us how amazing our rain covers are! Finally, yes, you can leave your cushions outside all year long, and some of our customers definitely do this. However, you are likely shortening the lifespan of your investment, so this would not be our recommendation.

2)Can your squabs handle a shower?

Most definitely! They are water-resistant and will dry out quickly when the sun comes out again. With quick drying foam inners, gone are the days of the waterlogged seat cushions.

3) Does powder coated aluminium outdoor furniture rust?

No, aluminium will not rust. Aluminium is naturally rust-resistant, which is why it is such a popular option as a material for outdoor furniture.

We sell aluminium outdoor furniture because it is so outdoor-friendly- no rust! We have three frame colours: white ( as shown), grey, and charcoal.

4)We are coastal. Does your furniture suit our environment?

Absolutely! The combination of powder coated aluminium outdoor furniture frames with 100% solution-dyed acrylic squabs is an excellent option for coastal areas where salt is a concern. Both materials are highly resistant to corrosion and deterioration caused by salty air and moisture, making them ideal for coastal environments.

Aluminium is a lightweight and durable material that won’t rust, ensuring long-lasting performance despite harsh coastal conditions. 100% solution-dyed acrylic fabric squabs are known for their fade-resistant properties and ability to withstand exposure to UV rays, maintaining their vibrant colours even in harsh coastal climates.

Powder coated aluminium with solution-dyed acrylic squabs creates a winning combination that can withstand the challenges of coastal living. It provides comfort, style, and durability, making it the perfect choice for creating an inviting outdoor space that will last for years to come.

5)Does aluminium outdoor furniture scratch easily?

Aluminium outdoor furniture is an excellent choice for those looking for a durable, scratch-resistant material that can withstand a wide variety of weather conditions. While not completely scratch-resistant, aluminium is more scratch resistant than other materials. The durable construction and protective coating help minimize the effects of everyday wear and tear. The outdoor squabs themselves are a further protection for your aluminium frame. Rain covers are another great option to help create a barrier between sharp objects and surfaces. Regular maintenance and thorough cleaning also help preserve the finish of your furniture and reduce minor scratches.

6)Does the fabric stain easily and is it difficult to clean?

No and no! Sunbrella and Agora outdoor fabrics are highly stain-resistant. Known for its excellent stain resistance, these 100% solution-dyed acrylic fabrics are a popular choice for outdoor furniture.  Our fabric back and seat cushion covers are removable, but we recommend that you clean your squabs with the covers on. Simply use a mild soapy solution and gently scrub the fabric with a soft brush or sponge. Let the solution sit for a while, then hose the squab thoroughly to remove any soap residue. Allow the air to dry in the sun. We often say- wash your squabs like you wash your car!)

Having a pet brings infinite joy to our lives, but it also comes with a unique set of challenges, when it comes to protecting our outdoor furniture.

Whether you have a mischievous puppy or a curious cat, their presence can lead to scratches, stains, and other forms of wear and tear on your outdoor furniture. With a little extra care,  your outdoor furniture will stay in top condition while still enjoying quality time with your four-legged family members.

Here’s Outside Space’s Pet Owners’ Guide to Caring for Outdoor Furniture, which are our top tips on how to care for outdoor furniture when you have a pet.

Choose pet-friendly furniture:
When choosing outdoor furniture, look for materials that are pet-friendly, durable, and resistant to scratches and stains. Look for materials like aluminum or synthetic wicker that can withstand pet activity. Materials like wood are simply more prone to scratches and chewing.

Create a space dedicated to animals:
Designate specific areas for your pet to relax and play in your outdoor space. This can be achieved by providing a pet bed. By creating an enticing space for your pet, you can divert their attention away from your furniture.

Regular cleaning:
Clean your outdoor furniture regularly to prevent dirt, fur, and dander from accumulating on it. I had one customer with a particularly oily cat that always sat in the same spot on her outdoor sofa!  Use a vacuum cleaner or a soft brush to remove any debris. For thorough cleaning, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use appropriate cleaning products that won’t harm the furniture. The better outdoor fabrics, like the ones we carry, can handle spot remover and bleach-based cleaners.

Use a protective cover:
Invest in a protective rain cover specifically designed for outdoor furniture. These covers provide an extra layer of protection from pet hair, scratches, and spills. When not in use, cover your furniture to protect it from external agents and discourage your pet from using it as a play area. One of our clients purchased our covers with their corner sofa to discourage their pet peacocks from roosting on it!

Train your animals:
Teaching your pet to respect boundaries is essential. Apply the same logic as you would for your indoor furniture and teach them not to jump or scratch furniture by providing replacement toys or scratch poles. Positive reinforcement techniques and consistent training will help establish good behavior around your outdoor furniture.

Provide shade and shelter:
Make sure your outdoor space has shaded areas or pet-friendly shelters so your pets can take shelter in hot or rainy weather. This will prevent them from taking shelter on your furniture, potentially causing damage.

Trim their nails:
Keeping your pet’s nails trimmed regularly is important. Sharp claws can easily scratch and damage the surface of your outdoor furniture. Consult your veterinarian or professional groomer to learn the proper technique for trimming your pet’s nails.

Apply protective coating:
Consider applying protective coatings or sealants to your furniture to add an extra layer of protection against scratches, stains and weather. Sunbrella produce a re-water proofing spray that should be applied every few years regardless of whether you are a pet owner or not.  Be sure to choose coatings that are safe for pets and the environment.

Monitor and control:
When we deliver outdoor furniture to a customer’s home,  the pets are often the first to try it out! While you may want to leave your pet outside, it’s essential to monitor their behavior from the get-go.  Inspect regularly for any signs of damage and take immediate action to prevent further damage. Habits die hard, so prevention is better than cure.

In summary, caring for your outdoor furniture takes a proactive approach and a little extra effort. By choosing pet-friendly materials, setting boundaries, and implementing regular cleaning and maintenance habits, you can enjoy the company of your furry friends without having to worry.

Award-winning Landscape Designer Crystal Connell-Nash, of Urban Flora Garden Design, started her landscape career working for well-respected landscape companies before branching out to form her own design business based on Auckland’s North Shore.

One of her recent projects was to transform the tired and sloping outdoor space of a multilevel Beach Haven home into a functional and inviting additional living space showcasing this home’s spectacular view and swimming pool as central features of this family’s outdoor living.

The original canvas she started with included an outdated liner pool, concrete pavers from the 80s, and requisite tin fencing from the same era. With the pool area at the front of the house adjacent to the street, privacy was also an issue.

With a keen appreciation of horticulture and her natural sense of spatial design and functionality, Crystal created a concept plan that utilised the natural contour.
