If you’re planning a pool and already thinking about the furniture that will sit around it, you’re ahead of most people. We’re Ultimate Pools, an Auckland fibreglass pool builder, and we work alongside Outside Space NZ on several pool installs. Between us, we see the same pattern often: furniture gets planned after the pool, when a few decisions earlier on would have made it much easier.
Here’s what we wish more clients knew before they started shopping for outdoor furniture and sun umbrellas.
The walkway around your pool, known as the coping, is one of the first things we plan, and it’s set well before construction starts. Once it’s poured or laid, it’s not something you casually widen later. Lighter-toned surrounding surfaces tend to stay cooler underfoot in direct sun, and a generous perimeter gives both people and furniture room to move rather than feeling cramped. New Zealand pool fencing law requires every pool to be enclosed by a compliant barrier, and the type of fencing you choose, aluminium, semi-frameless glass, or fully frameless glass, is decided during the design and consent process. This matters for furniture planning because it determines whether your lounging zone sits inside or outside the fenced area, and glass fencing in particular can concentrate heat onto anything placed close behind it. Deciding on fencing early gives you and your furniture supplier time to plan around it properly, rather than working it out after the panels are in.
Pool placement isn’t only about the shell. A pool positioned close to the house, and visible from key indoor living spaces, tends to get used more and makes supervision easier, and that same proximity is usually where a family wants seating and a dining or lounge zone as well. Planning furniture and landscaping together with pool placement, rather than as separate decisions, tends to produce a backyard that actually flows.
Slope, soil conditions, and access all affect the pool build, and they affect what’s left over for furniture too. A section that needs a crane or extensive retaining work may leave a different footprint than originally imagined. We always recommend a free site visit before anything is finalised, partly so we can give you an accurate picture of the pool itself, but also so you know what usable space you’re actually working with once the build is done.
Pool consent in Auckland typically takes several weeks to process, and the full journey from first conversation to first swim is usually four to seven months. That’s a real window to plan the outdoor living space properly rather than rushing it once the pool is finished. Clients who use that time to talk to a furniture specialist, rather than leaving it until the pool is full of water, tend to end up with a space that actually works.
We install across North Shore, West Auckland, Hibiscus Coast, Mangawhai and Rodney, and conditions vary a lot between a coastal Mangawhai section and a sheltered North Shore backyard. What holds up next to a saltwater pool in an exposed coastal spot is different to what you’d choose for a sheltered inner suburb. Talk to your furniture supplier before your pool build starts, not after it finishes. The coping width, fencing type, pool placement, and site access are all decided early, and they all affect what you can do with the space around your pool later.
